BADASS: THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND
Spine-Crushing Tales of the Most Merciless Gods, Monsters, Heroes, Villains, and Mythical Creatures Ever Envisioned
by Ben Thompson
When the Soothsayer exhorted Caesar to “beware the Ides of March,” he clearly knew what was coming. BADASS: THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND (Harper; Trade Paperback; On Sale: March 15, 2011; $16.99) is an over-the top collection of asskicking maniacs from the pages of mythology, folklore, and pop culture so epic in their legendariness that some third-world countries are in immediate danger of forsaking their primitive beliefs and adopting this book as a religious text.
Skipping over all the boring parts where no one gets maimed, BADASS: THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND retells the stories of Anubis, Beowulf, Captain Kirk, and every super-epic imaginary hero in between. The major players are there in full force, including Darth Vader, the most abusive father in cinema history; Moby-Dick, hull-smashing emperor of Sea World; and Zeus, the god with lightning skills so impressive he could dress up like a swan and still pick up chicks. Likewise, Thompson is careful not to exclude lesser-known hell-raisers, like El Chupacabra, Puerto Rico’s vomit-loving answer to the Loch Ness Monster; Baba Yaga, the evil Russian witch who saved money on stilts by standing her house on chicken legs; and Huitzilopochtli, the heart-devouring destroyer of spelling-bees.
Honor Mars, the God of War, by picking up this book on his special day, and get yourself a lesson in ass-kicking, baby-juggling, zombie-pirate killing mayhem. Read BADASS: THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND.
About the Author
Ben Thompson has run the warhammer of a website badassoftheweek.com since 2004, and has written humorous history-related columns for outlets such as Cracked, Fangoria, Penthouse, and the American Mustache Institute. Even though he has never flown a jetpack over the Atlantic Ocean or punched someone so hard his head exploded, Thompson is still considered by many to be the foremost expert on badassitude.
