Diary of a Wimpy Kid Tops Sucker Punch Weekend

This weekend there was an exciting movie race to earn the title of top dog at the box office. Two films making their debuts were the sequel to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rodrick Rules, and Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. One film follows the woes of a wimpy school boy. The other is for a slightly more mature audience and follows hot chicks trapped in in a mental institution and their trippy fantasies which parallel their fight for freedom.

Here’s how yahoo! described the two films:

Sucker Punch – Close your eyes. Open your mind. You will be unprepared. A young girl’s dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what is imaginary. She has been locked away against her will, but Babydoll has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls–the outspoken Rocket, the street-smart Blondie, the fiercely loyal Amber and the reluctant Sweet Pea – to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue, Madam Gorski and the High Roller.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules – Greg is back with problems new and old. Greg chronicles a hilarious litany of problems, alternating between home and school, focusing this time on the particular punishments of his reprobate older brother, Rodrick. Whether Greg is suffering on the swim team or trying out for the K-12 school talent show as Magician’s Assistant to a First Grader, his escapades are united by his struggle to avoid embarrassment.

According to deadline.com “Friday night, it appeared that Fox’s Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules sequel opened as a surprise No. 1, but then Warner Bros’ Sucker Punch came on strong in late night West Coast shows. By Saturday moning, they were looking neck-and-neck…”

So, who one the race? Wimpy Kid wasn’t so wimpy with a $24 Million weekend total, leaving Baby Doll and her friends to come in second with a weekend total of $20 Million.
