Neil Gaiman and Geoff Johns on Sandman?

It might all seem like a very confusing dream for fans of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, but the latest from ComingSoon.net will hopefully put your feet back on solid ground.

Fans of Dream and the rest of the Endless who have been anxiously awaiting someone to take up the challenge of bringing Gaiman’s story from the page to the screen were no doubt excited when they learned Supernatural’s Eric Kripke would be adapting the comic book for a television series, but that excitement turned to dismay when Kripke recently announced, “Unfortunately, for a lot of varying reasons, Sandman is not in the works, at least for this season… hopefully we can do it again in the future.”

A new development indicates that while Kripke might no longer be associated with the project, the quest to bring Sandman to TV is still alive and well. Comic book author and DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns tweeted yesterday,

“Correction to world. The Sandman is AWAKE! :) Psyched to be working with [Neil] on developing one of the greatest series ever!”

He followed up with,

Sandman in any form – comics to live action – doesn’t work without [Neil]

While there’s no official word on why, or even if, Kripke left the project, having Gaiman on-board is a natural fit.

If you haven’t entered the world of Dream, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny, then you should head over to the on-going Sandman read by sci-fi writer and editor Matthew Cheney for a great thought-provoking introduction.
