5th Annual Book Tournament Results – Round 3
Round 3 has officially closed for the 5th Annual BSCreview Book Tournament. Since I didn’t have time yesterday morning to do more than shut down the polls for Middle Earth and Forgotten Realms brackets, I decided to just roll the results for all four brackets for round 3 into one post. Round 4–for control of the brackets–opens this morning for the Middle Earth and Forgotten Realms brackets, and tomorrow (Friday, April 8, 2011) for the Malazan Empire and Weteros brackets. If you missed the schedule of events initially, here is where the tournament goes from here:
Round 5 – Semi-finals: Middle Earth VS Forgotten Realms bracket winners and Malazan Empire VS Westeros bracket winners play off on Tuesday 4/12.
Round 6 - Consolation (losers of the above two matches) opens on Friday 4/15 (voting will close and third place winner announced Thursday 4/21)
Round 6 - Finals (winners of the above two matches) opens on Saturday, 4/16 (voting will close and tournament champion announced Friday 4/22)
And now, let’s get to the results for round 3! If you want to track how the elite 8 got here, you can follow the results from round 2 for Middle Earth and Forgotten Realms, and Malazan Empire and Westeros.
MIDDLE EARTH BRACKET
8 seed Jade Man’s Skin by Daniel Fox continues its run, edging out 4 seed Cold Magic by Kate Elliot with a scant 53% of the favor.
10 seed Native Star by M.K. Hobson falls to 14 seed Terminal State by Jeff Somers, which took 58% of the votes.
This means that Jade Man’s Skin and Terminal State will be playing off to be the Middle Earth Bracket champion.
VS
FORGOTTEN REALMS BRACKET
Terry Pratchett’s no. 8 I Shall Wear Midnight rolls over no. 4 Changes by Jim Butcher with 60% of the votes.
In a somewhat surprising turn, 15 seed Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay which had showed strongly in previous rounds fell to 14 seed The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark Hodder, which took 55% of the votes.
This means that I Shall Wear Midnight and The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack will battle to be the Forgotten Realms champion (and the most intrigungly named novel of the tournament), also squaring off today.
VS
MALAZAN EMPIRE BRACKET
8 seed The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemisin moves past 4 seed Changeless by Gail Carriger with 58% of the votes in the most-voted on match of round 3 for this bracket.
No. 7 Geist by Philippa Ballantine steamrolls no. 11 Passion Play by Beth Bernobich, moving forward with 65% of the votes.
This means that The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms and Geist will play out to be the Malazan Empire champion starting tomorrow.
VS
WESTEROS BRACKET
1 seed An Artificial Night by Seanan McGuire continues to live up to its (inadvertently appropriate) seeding, stomping past last year’s runner-up author Catherynne M. Valente’s 7 seed Habitation of the Blessed with 84% of the votes in the most-voted on match yet in the tournament.
No. 6 From Hell with Love by Simon R. Green goes down to no. 4 Chill by Elizabeth Bear, which claimed an impressive 73% of the votes.
This means that An Artificial Night and Chill will face each other to be the Westeros champion, also starting tomorrow.
VS
Make sure you come back today to vote for round 4 part 1, and tomorrow for round 4 part 2! And remember, round 5 opens on Tuesday, April 12, so all voting in round 4 will close Monday morning, April 11.
