Ender’s Game to Summit Entertainment, Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods Through Lionsgate

At long last, it looks like two films might finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Deadline brings word that the rights to Orson Scott Card’s sci-fi novel Ender’s Game have been acquired by Summit Entertainment, with Gavin Hood set to direct the movie adaptation.

Warner Bros got the rights back in 2002 but various problems kept the film from becoming a reality. Now, with Summit looking for something to compete with The Hunger Games, Ender’s Game has a fresh start. Card’s novel is about a teen named Ender Wiggin, who becomes a formidable warrior through a process that makes games a part of combat training. The story started off as a short story, and then became a novel that turned into a series, so there’s plenty of material for sequels, and we know how much Hollywood loves those.

The other film making its way to the theater, according to Deadline, is Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods. The horror film is actually completed but it’s been spending some time sitting on a shelf somewhere because MGM’s bankruptcy problems disrupted distribution. Now, Lionsgate is making a deal with MGM to get the film out in the world, and the delay could actually turn out to benefit the movie because the cast includes Chris Hemsworth, who’s on everyone’s radar these days because of Thor (check out the review) and The Avengers. The Cabin in the Woods doesn’t have a release date yet but don’t be surprised if it arrives in October since horror and Halloween are a perfect match.

Although you probably won’t find any nuggets of arcane wisdom in the almost-one-sided-interview, you can also check out Boomtron’s own Elena Nola chatting with Cabin in the Woods actress Jodelle Ferland, who you might recognize as Twilight’s Bree Tanner.
