HBO picks up Veep

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is no stranger to HBO with numerous guest stints as herself on Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, but she’ll be hanging around there a lot more, according to the latest from Deadline.

Louis-Dreyfus is returning to full-time primetime as the lead in Veep, a new comedy written by British comedian, writer and director Armando Iannucci. The story centers on Senator Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus) who becomes vice president and discovers “the job is nothing like she expected and everything everyone ever warned her about.”

The series also stars Anna Chlumsky as her chief of staff, Tony Hale as her right-hand man and Sufe Bradshaw as her assistant, as well as Reid Scott, Tim Simons and Matt Walsh.

With an Emmy for both NBC’s Seinfeld and CBS’s The New Adventures of Old Christine, Louis-Dreyfus is probably the perfect person to make this pseudo-political comedy fly.

Iannucci co-wrote and directed the pilot, and will be executive producing with Chris Godsick and New York Magazine’s Frank Rich.

Veep starts production this fall and is expected to have a 2012 premiere.
