Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth Primed for The Hunger Games

Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen has found her partners in The Hunger Games, according to the latest from Deadline. Although Hunter Parrish was thought to be the top contender for the role, Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are Alright, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant) has landed the role of Peeta, with Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song, Triangle) being cast as Gale.

In the Suzanne Collins novel, Gale is Katniss’ hunting partner before she becomes a part of the Hunger Games competition, and Peeta is the son of a baker who’s chosen to be her partner in the deadly reality show.

The casting of Lawrence as Katniss set the web on fire with fans of the book showing considerable doubt regarding the decision, prompting Collins to release a statement on the subject, so it should be interesting to see how fans of the book trilogy react to Hutcherson and Hemsworth in the other lead roles.

Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games is scheduled for a March 23, 2012 release.

What do you think about the big screen version of Peeta and Gale? Do they fit the characters you pictured in the books?

I really don’t like Hutcherson. I don’t like hardly anything that he’s in. His acting skills are sub-par, and all of his roles are the jerk or the bully. I really just can’t see him playing Peeta, the kind and gentle boy in the book. Liam Hemsworth would make a better Peeta in my opinion, but I’m glad he’s in it. I wish that Alex Pettyfer had been offered a spot!
