Hawaii Five-0 – “Ua Hiki Mau Kapalena Pau” – review

Five-0 raids Wo Fat’s house, only to walk into a bomb blast that human trafficker Sang Min (Will Yun Lee) intended for Wo Fat himself. Danno chases Sang Min into a nearby house and finds an elderly man lying on the floor. Stopping to check the man’s pulse, Danno is overcome by a chemical weapon.
Thanks to Jenna Kaye (Larisa Oleynik), who came along on the raid, the chemical weapon was identified as Sarin, and Danno was given the proper antidote. Meanwhile, the team had to figure out how and why a possible terrorist attack would target that house in particular.
I liked that this episode got to the action right away. The threat to Danno’s life/larger terrorist threat supplied enough urgency for the entire hour. The Sarin was eventually traced to a Russian dealer, which furthered the theory of a terrorist attack, but this was actually good cover for a more personal crime.
In the B story, as expected, HPD Internal Affairs checked the serial numbers on the money Chin Ho paid back and determined he was covering up his uncle’s earlier theft. Somewhat surprisingly, Chin was exonerated and not charged with obstruction of justice.
I bought into this episode’s stakes despite knowing they would not be as high as in next week’s season finale. In the finale, Wo Fat apparently frames McGarrett, causing the Five-0 task force to be disbanded. Read next week’s review to find out how well the writers execute the story.
