Will Smith in Tarantino’s Django Unchained?

A little Twitter bird recently revealed that Quentin Tarantino’s spin on the ‘spaghetti western’ is called Django Unchained, and THR now reports that Will Smith, otherwise known as box-office gold, is the frontrunner for the film, which might also star Samuel L. Jackson and Cristopher Waltz.
While Tarantino would like to have Smith in the film, no official offers have been made at this time, as the director goes in search of a studio partner to release the film internationally. U.S. distribution is already taken care of, with the Weinstein Co. handling that part of the deal. Choices for international distribution include Universal, Sony, Paramount, and Warner Bros.
The role that might be filled by Smith, is the title character, Django, a freed slave trying to reunite with his slave wife. Christopher Waltz is eyed for the part of the German bounty hunter that trains and assists Django, and Jackson would be the bad guy’s house slave that faces off against the hero.
I’m a big fan of Will Smith’s and can easily picture him in this movie, and it would be great for him to have a good western under his belt so fans can think of him favorably instead of having nightmare flashbacks to the train wreck that was The Wild, Wild West.
