Jon Hamm – Mad Men Ends in 3 Seasons?

Back in April, a deal was finally struck to have Mad Men continue for Seasons 5 and 6, with Season 7 pretty much a given. All this happened after AMC and creator Matthew Weiner clashed over budget issues. Now we have three years of Don Draper to look forward to and I for one couldn’t be happier. But what will happen when those three years are up? Well Jon Hamm seems to have some idea, according to Digital Spy.

The Mad Men star spoke to the BBC and said he believed that his show should come to an end when it’s contract is up. He cites the UK version of The Office as a show that ended and was better for it. I couldn’t agree more with his stance. A show is only good until it’s not anymore, and the longer it’s on air the quicker it becomes stale and repetitive. I would say that even seven seasons is too long in this day and age. When you look out at all of the once great shows, you notice a pattern; they were all in their sixth or seventh season when things started to go downhill, sometimes sooner. I’ve seen it mostly happen in sitcoms, but hour-long dramas aren’t immune. The smartest thing Weiner can do is see this contract as the time he has left to tell the story he wants. Plan out where you want to take your characters and then go there, end it on your terms. If any show can stay fresh, it’s Mad Men.
