No New Doctor Who Season Until 2012?

Last week we got the most delightful news that Matt Smith would be coming back to play the titular Doctor in Doctor Who for 14 more episodes. Fans rejoiced all around the world, at least that’s what I like to imagine. This week, we received some less than good news. There was a rumor that despite Smith signing on, there might not be a full new season of Doctor Who for 2012. Now that rumor has been made official. The controller of BBC One, Danny Cohen, spoke at an event confirming that the sci fi show would not be back for a full season in 2012, but would make a special run for the shows anniversary in 2013.

This doesn’t mean there won’t be any Doctor Who next year though. Most likely we’ll get a chunk of episodes in 2012 and then the rest will air in 2013. I don’t understand the logic behind the decision to split up the season. I think fans would agree with me that they would like full seasons every year, no matter whose anniversary it is. More Doctor Who is better, am I right? Sometimes the business end of this industry makes some pretty bizarre decisions.

As of right now there’s no word on when this partial season will air next year, or when production will start, or really anything for that matter. Those details are probably still being hammered out and once a decision has been made about how many episodes 2012 will get I’m sure there will be some kind of announcement.

About Brody Gibson

+Brody Gibson studied film in Vancouver, BC. I originally intended to become a video editor, but realized I have a passion for writing. To say I love television is a bit of an understatement. I watch it religiously, think about it constantly. To be able to talk about it is one the best things in the world. Combining that with my love of writing gives me the opportunity to express my opinions to the Internet masses and start gripping conversations.

Sad really . . . or frustrating . . . makes me wonder if BBC wants the Doctor back. Here in the states, if a network does that, its the kiss of death. I realize TV is different in the UK though. Still, grrrr.
