Valerie Cruz in Syfy’s Alphas

Syfy’s entry into the world of humans with special abilities, Alphas, has found itself a recurring guest star in Valerie Cruz (formerly of the now canceled Off the Map). Cruz will make her first appearance in the third episode of the summer series, titled “Cause and Effect”. She portrays mysterious Depart of Defense Special Agent Kathy Sullivan and so far it seems for his first appearance she’ll solely be interacting with David Strathairn who plays the unconventional leader of his team of Alphas despite not having any superhuman abilities himself
Alphas is a more grounded variation of the “team of mutants fighting bad guys” theme that started decades ago with Marvel’s X-Men franchise. A similar approach was taken with NBC’s Heroes a few years back, but it eventually fell a part, losing touch with reality. Alphas seeks to be even more down to earth, with the main character’s abilities more realistic and practical and less ridiculous. Expect to see abilities like perfect aim, control of adrenal glands, and sense enhancing. It’s not quite as grandiose as fire starting or angel wings, but those types of powers can get pretty silly. I prefer these simpler, more useful powers. It helps make the whole premise of the show more believable.
Alphas premiers July 11 and I got to say I’m decently psyched to see this series after the colossal disappoint that Heroes became. As long as it can keep itself grounded and keep its plotlines tight it will fair a lot better than it’s spiritual predecessor.
