X-Men First Class at the Box Office

Wolverine may be my favorite X-Man, but I hated X-Men Origins: Wolverine and loved X-Men: First Class, which saw a beautiful premier weekend and included SMALL SPOILER ALERT a short and sweet Wolverine cameo! Hey, but you don’t have to take my word for it when it comes to weighing whether to give the adventure prequel a watch. You can enjoy Emmaleigh’s BoomTron review of the film and follow that up by peeking at Rachael’s.
Another indicator of the film’s rock star status is the box office. According to BoxOfficeMojo, the take was good. The film reaped an “estimated $21 million on approximately 6,900 screens at 3,641 locations” on the Friday it opened. It knocked Hangover 2 right out of the top seat.
But the film could have done better. Oddly, “First Class was a sizable step down from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which made $34.4 million on its opening day, and it was even less than The Incredible Hulk‘s $21.5 million.”
If I had to guess why there wasn’t a bigger take in, I’d attribute the number to:
1. Too many other hot films out at the same time, including Hangover 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Fast Five. That’s a lot of options, and remember, the kids are home for summer and probably getting to see a lot of movies with the parents.
2. A lot of sequels and prequels never live up to the hype. Marvel fans don’t like to be disappointed, so viewing was taking a risk!
Want another reason to see the film if you haven’t? Ladies, whether you grew up with the X-Men or not, actress Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) is your Katniss Everdeen! You are going to want to get to know her!
