A Game of Thrones Season 2 – Gwendoline Christie Cast as Brienne

HBO’s A Game of Thrones season 2 casting continues with author George R.R Martin revealing that the role of Brienne, Maid of Tarth, going to British actress, Gwendoline Christie. I have not seen the first season of A Game of Thrones but the character’s novel description calls calls for a less than comely and both larger and stronger than even most men. She is the heir of House Tarth and is mockingly called “Brienne the Beauty”. If things hold true to the books we should be introduced to Gwendoline Christie in the midst of kicking ass and offers yet another character that allows for perspective, evaluation, and entertainment in application regarding gender in Martin’s Westeros.
Christie is being called a relative unknown, though she was in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. She joins Natalie Dormer as season 2 Game of Thrones additions, who was last month cast as the lovely Margaery Tyrell. During the wait for the next season and if you’re into this sort of thing, Martin fans have the publication of A Dance with Dragons to look forward to next week. You can also check out the Boomtron podcast for thoughts on the first season finale with Elena, Rachel and Elisabeth, or kick it book-style with our on-going combo reread of A Game of Thrones (now up to chapter 33!).
