No Stargate from Spyglass?

Alaina Huffman as Tamara Johansen in Stargate Universe

The final nail has been slammed into the sarcophagus for Stargate fans, as Gateworld shares the sad news that Stargate: Universe is the last we’ll see of the long-running franchise.

The future looked a little bleak when MGM crumbled under the weight of bankruptcy but fans breathed a sigh of relief when the studio was able to survive their financial mess, and it seemed like there might still be hope for more Stargate action since the new guys at the helm, Spyglass Entertainment chiefs Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, never made any official statements regarding the fate of the series.

That light at the end of the tunnel has finally been snuffed out, with the news being provided by actress Alaina Huffman (Lt. Tamara Johansen, Stargate Universe) during the Wizard World Comic Con in Philadelphia last month, “They tried very hard to put a movie together, but Spyglass is not interested in Stargate, so therefore would not fund the movie. So we — we, as in Brad [Wright] — had to look for money elsewhere, and came very close several times.”

It’s sad that Stargate no longer packs the punch it used to because Huffman revealed what executive producer Brad Wright had in mind, and it sounds like it would have been a great way to end a great franchise.

“His plan, from what I understood … was he wanted to do two movies, one to finish out our storyline, and one [with] an all-star cast they that they would shoot in Hawaii. I don’t know why they couldn’t get the funding. I thought that would have been a really great way to close out the series,” Huffman said. “To me, it’s really unfortunate that the franchise and the producers didn’t get the opportunity, given their long track record, to finish out the story.”

On the bright side, with the way Hollywood is showing they’re incapable of coming up with new ideas these days, I figure it will only be another five years before they reboot the original Stargate movie, so we’ll be able to start all over again.
