Penny Johnson Jerald Invades Nathan Fillion’s Castle

Nathan Fillion is going to have to watch his back now that Penny Johnson Jerald is going to be his new boss in ABC’s Castle according to TV Guide. Jerald will play Victoria Gates who has spent a good chunk of her career working Internal Affairs. She’s focuses on advancing her career, which she has now that she’s captain of the 12th precinct, but usually forgets to actually do any police work because she’s too busy kissing her superior’s butts. It’s a common characteristic of TV show bosses to only care about advancing their careers and everyone loves having someone to hate.
Victoria has a pretty nifty nickname, Iron Gates. If that doesn’t scream hard ass I don’t know what will. “Everybody’s getting along really well in the precinct, and we think there can be a little more conflict,” said creator Andrew W. Marlowe of his reasoning behind this character. “We think it’s interesting to grow Beckett and Castle by having somebody who … may not look as favorably on the Castle-Beckett relationship.” I can’t really argue with his logic. Friction is often the best way to create good storytelling. If everyone were Mr. and Mrs. Nice Person then things would be boring.
Johnson has done her thing in many a show over the years, but is probably best known for playing Sherry Palmer, the ex-wife of the president, in 24. You can also see her on The Larry Sanders Show, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, ER, October Road, and NCSI.
