Russell Tovey in Sherlock Season 2, Hound of the Baskervilles

BBC is putting together the second season of its modern retelling of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Each season is made up of three 90-minute episodes and the upcoming Season 2 will adapt three of the most famous Sherlock Holmes stores A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Final Problem. Russell Tovey announced via his Twitter account that he was going to be a part of the second season, airing this fall. He tweeted “Yep! I’m gonna be in BBC’s Sherlock… Official!” He later tweeted again, this time revealing his role and which episode he would appear in, “Hound of the Baskervilles… And I am playing Henry… Good times” Henry refers to Sir Henry Baskerville, the nephew of Sir Charles Baskerville.
I’ve heard positive things about this series, though I’ve yet to watch it. A modernization seems fun, even if it has been done in the past, and not very well if I remember correctly. But more is possible these days. It’s a complicated thing to adapt to TV, and it’s smart to extend the episodes to 90 minutes to fit in all the information Holmes needs to solve his cases. If I find some time, I wouldn’t mind comparing this series to the Guy Richie film to see which one does the best job of adapting Doyles iconic character. If I had even more time, I’d go over and read Jonathon McCalmont’s series of articles titled “Sherlock’s Little Mistakes” that examines the hypothetical question of “What if Holmes was wrong?”
