The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer Swings Online

The Amazing Spider-Man Marc Webb Marvel Comics

There’s some good stuff in the first official trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man that hit the scene courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, but the main message seems to be, “forget those other three Spidey movies you might have seen because we’re going in a brand new direction here.” This webslinger seems to be following in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, with a grittier and more mysterious feel to it. Right off the bat, we get a feel for the more serious vibe as Peter Parker’s parents leave him with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. We might not see any more of dear old mom and dad but their presence is still felt years later, when Peter discovers a bag that had belonged to his father.

We get a brief introduction to the Stacy family, and it’s plain to see that Gwen’s dad (Denis Leary) obviously doesn’t share the warm, fuzzy feelings for Peter that Gwen does. We even get to see Rhys Ifans as the man who will become the Lizard.

The new trailer covers the standard bases by showing us Peter getting bit by the radioactive spider, although I have to wonder exactly how dark this version of Spidey will be. In one scene, Peter plucks a strand of spider web from the bite on his neck and he uses his new spider-like reflexes to catch a fly. What the heck is he planning on doing with that? Fortunately, we don’t find out because he lets it go, but I wonder if things would have been different if Aunt May hadn’t been there.

My absolutely favorite part of the preview is the cool point-of-view action sequence we get as Spider-Man explores (patrols?) the city. Ever wonder what it would be like to be Spider-Man? Check out the video to get a pretty good idea of what it’s like in the wall-crawler’s boots.
