Sex and the City with Selena Gomez, Blake Lively or Emma Roberts?

Sex and the City HBO

There has been talk of a prequel to HBO’s Sex and the City series as of late, with the LA Times recently reporting the likes of Blake Lively, Selena Gomez and Emma Roberts as potential new cast members. Can anyone see those three playing younger versions of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte? Interestingly, the talking doesn’t seem to be about a potential movie, but a new TV series. It looks like HBO are the ones pursuing this possibility, but they could very well sell the show to another network.

In a nutshell, the prequel series would be based on the prequel novels The Carrie Diaries and Summer in the City. Expect a high school setting and I would think a little less sex. I’m not saying teenagers don’t do the deed, but I have a hard time seeing Gomez or Lively bearing it all even for HBO.

So how do the former cast members feel about this news? Bridget Moynahan, who played Mr. Big’s wife, isn’t at all pleased, saying, “If you want to do something with Blake Lively and Emma Roberts and all these wonderful young actresses, then just come up with your own material and leave Sex and the City as it is.” Carrie herself (Sarah Jessica Parker) feels the series is unnecessary. “I don’t think we can pretend to go back,” she said. “It’s creating two histories. It’s like, ‘Oh I didn’t know that about Carrie Bradshaw.” In all honesty, they’re probably right. Sex and the City creator Darren Star has yet to comment.
