Emma Stone GANGSTER with Ryan Gosling and Pooch

No, actor Ryan Gosling isn’t playing a gangster in today’s fabulous set photos, but a notorious historical figure is his prey in Gangster Squad, which reunites him with co-star Emma Stone. The pair of hot young stars smooched on-screen for the dramatic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, starring Steve Carrell. But who would have expected them to be sharing the screen again so soon?

And as lovers once again with, a cute little pooch to boot? I’ve got to say, this casting news makes me happy indeed.

The Ruben Fleischer crime drama Gangster Squad, revolves around a crack team of 1940′s L.A. law men given the task of taking down the mobster Mickey Cohen. If this premise sounds vaguely familiar, you may be recalling the Academy Award winning picture, L.A. Confidential, which examined good cops and bad during the aftermath of Mickey Cohen’s operations. That was a killer good film, so here’s to hoping Gangster Squad has similar luck and styling.

Gosling is on fire this year. The Notebook actor and star of Fracture has been scarce for a while, playing only in obscure, emotionally raw indie films, such as Blue Valentine. Finally, he seems to be embracing his own star power. That isn’t to say Drive, his action film, in theaters now, isn’t a little, well, DIFFERENT and artsy–so pay attention Tarantino fans–but at least it is in the top three at the box office, which is good. His acting chops in it are beyond dispute and will continue to be cheered for if Ides of March, his political picture co-starring George Clooney, turns out as swimmingly as I think it will. That one reminds me a lot of City Hall, starring John Cusack and Al Pacino.

In Gangster Squad, Gosling is a cop and Stone is his wife. Emma fits in period pieces masterfully, as was evident in The Help.
