MARVEL Assemble! THE AVENGERS trailer

Today is the day every Marvel Comics fan has been waiting for, the day we finally get to see some of Marvel’s mightiest heroes assembled together for the first time in the same movie. The first official trailer for The Avengers has arrived and it looks like the movie will actually live up to its hype.

With the exception of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, we’ve seen all these guys in action before, but this fanboy still got a major thrill when he saw Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Black Widow kicking butt together in the same movie. I’ve always wanted a big screen version of The Avengers but never thought it would become reality, thinking no studio would ever foot the bill for so many big name actors and major characters in the same film, but this bit of awesomeness reveals that anything is possible these days.

From what the preview shows, we’re in for loads of excitement, and not just from having so many major players together for the first time. Marvel Studios seems to be giving the Transformers franchise a run for its money with the number of explosions that occur, and Loki looks suitably bad-ass this time around. Personally, I thought the god of mischief came across like a spoiled punk in Thor but he has no problem with reveling in the role of villain this time around and he actually looks like an actual threat.

I wasn’t expecting to see any of the outer space baddies, and the trailer proved me correct on that point, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Bruce Banner go mean and green as the Hulk. The green giant doesn’t get a lot of screen time but it looks like the CGI guys nailed the look perfectly.

The Avengers assemble in theaters on May 4, 2012.
