Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman SHERLOCK Season 2 Promo

The game’s afoot as the BBC rolls out a new promo for Season 2 of Sherlock, a modern spin on the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion, Watson, which is expected to air early in 2012.

I’ll be honest and admit that this is my first brush with Sherlock, which is actually kind of surprising to me. I’m a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and a dedicated Doctor Who follower, so how did I miss the contemporary spin on the classic sleuth that has the Time Lord’s Steven Moffat connected to it? It’s probably a case only Holmes could solve… or quite possibly just a matter of a great show slipping through the cracks because of the sheer volume of things to watch on TV.

Fortunately, the stylish poster intrigued me enough to look into things and now Sherlock joins the good Doctor as one of those BBC shows that I have to watch. Fortunately, I’m only one season behind so it won’t take long to catch up with what’s been going on with the updated versions of Holmes, Watson, and Moriarty.

Have you been keeping track of Sherlock? Is it as good as it appears to be or just another poor attempt at reviving Sherlock Holmes for a modern crowd?

It’s an amazing take on the legend updated to be in 21st century London and works due to the team both behind and in front of the cameras. Ironically Stephan Moffat and Mark Gatiss came up with the idea going back/forth on the train from London to Cardiff and casting overlapped with Doctor Who so Matt Smith auditioned for Dr. Watson as Benedict Cumberbatch (has there ever been a more British name than that?) had already been cast as Sherlock Holmes (after some talk of him being the Doctor). Matt Smith walked in and apparently Moffat immediately realized he was too much like Benedict in terms of energy and personality so it wouldn’t work to have him be Watson. He was looking to go older with the Doctor after David Tennant but realized Matt Smith as young as he is channels age perfect. The rest was history. How Moffat was able to do both Doctor Who and Sherlock with help from the great Mark Gatiss (both writer and occasional actor in both series) is beyond me (must have a real TARDIS). There’s been talk of crossovers (won’t happen two very different worlds just like Being Human-though trippy unless it was treated as a different timeline/reality/dimension, that means bringing Doctor Who’s history including aliens into these worlds. There’s also been talk of Benedict possibly being the next Doctor when Matt Smith eventually leaves or at least appearing in an episode. We’ll see…

I’ve been a fan of Sherlock Holmes for decades, I am devoted to the performance by Jeremy Brett, the modern film with RDJ was okay, but SHERLOCK with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as the Best Watson Ever is the only thing that gets me to watch tv these days.

Hands down one of the most entertaining tv shows of last year and surprisingly faithful to the spirit of the book. It’s written by two diehard fans of the ACD novels and they incorporate an immense amount of details from the books into the show.

Much better than the RDJ movie version, which is fun for an action-hero-y take but doesn’t hold up on repeat viewings unlike Sherlock. The chemistry between the leads is fantastic and Martin Freeman gave a very layered and nuance performance as Watson (at least good enough to convince Peter Jackson to shift The Hobbit schedule to accommodate Freeman’s Sherlock Series 2 commitments).

Hope it gets more traction stateside then we can all be spared the inevitably horrible CBS attempt on the franchise.

Surprisingly, I find my self enjoying this show immensely (considering I have such a strong attachment to the previous versions such as Jeremy Brett). The characters are portrayed fantastically, and these have to be my favourite versions of Watson and Lestrade so far. The story, however entertaining and flashy, is discontinuous and questionable at its core. Tons of modern technology is conveniently left out for plots’ sake, and obvious facts omitted (or I’m simply ignorant, but since when did they not do a full body check to, say, discover identical tattoos on two dead bodies connected to the same case? If they did find them, why wasn’t it suspicious?). Another problem I have is with the endings of the episodes. I notice that with most of Moffat’s work, the story is fantastically brilliant, but he almost never delivers with his conclusion. It can be incredibly anticlimactic. Other than those points, I am eagerly awaiting season 2!
