DESPICABLE ME 2 May Be Getting Some Oscar Talent

You may have never thought it would happen, but surprisingly, Oscar-winner Javier Bardem is apparently in negotiations with Universal Studios to provide the main bad-guys voice in the sequel to their surprise hit, ‘Despicable Me 2′. In the first film, a plot centered around the curmudgeonly vaguely east-European “bad-guy” Gru (played by a deeply accented Steve Carell) whose plans for world dominance are overturned when three little orphan girls come under his care. Most of the original ensemble cast is expected to return with some new big names, including this one.

If he signs on, Bardem will play the new villain El Macho, who apparently also has a young son named Machito. While certain other plot details aren’t being said and shown to the public, it’s possible that a big rivalry between their young children could be what pits the two foes against each other. Or vice-versa – perhaps it is their paternal competition that falls over into their children’s lives. Either way, having Bardem on-board is pretty cool I must say, considering he never does anything like this and it’s pretty cool to see such an acclaimed actor do something, where he doesn’t seem like he’s taking himself too seriously.

Although I was not very impressed by the first one, it still did not matter because it ended up grossing $540 million worldwide, which was a total surprise for Universal and co. considering how unpromising this film looked in the first place. It’s what also lead to all of those damn minion sweat-shirts and dolls that I see just about every kid sporting. Reuniting ‘Despicable Me’ director Pierre Coffin and writer Ken Daurio, ‘Despicable Me 2′ is set to hit theaters on July 3rd, 2013. I don’t think anything will be new from the first one, but my opinion doesn’t really matter considering this one will probably make more than the first and then we’ll be getting ready for the 3rd, 4th, and so on and so forth. However, you never know.

Anyway, forget about me! How do you feel about this? Is Bardem a good choice? Or are you already annoyed of the minions by now as much as I am? Let me hear it in the comments!
