DEXTER – It’s Doomsday

Dexter kicked into high gear this week with a great episode that really upped the stakes and established the new killers, the Doomsday killers, as worthy foes for Dexter. Dexter’s ‘Jesus Christ’ reaction to the macabre crime scene was brilliant and it really displayed how formidable and inventive our villains are and you know it’s fucked up when even Dexter is shocked by what he’s seeing. I love how Deb and Dexter came to the same conclusion that I did, that it was like the Ice-Truck Killer all over again. I think it’s great how the show is recalling its past, even the Bay Harbour Butcher was mentioned this episode! If the show keeps respecting its past and putting it to good use like this then the future of Dexter is looking bright!

Mos Def is a fantastic addition to Dexter and commands every scene he’s in. He is fast becoming a true friend to Dexter. He might not be able to confide in him about his dark side, but he is someone who gives Dexter comfort and a sense of peace. He was fantastic when telling that story about his father and through some miracle the stuff he spouts about God and Jesus all the time doesn’t come off as annoying or irritating, I hope he sticks around for a long time!

Have to say some of the background storylines this week weren’t that interesting though. I was kind of disappointed with how the Ryan storyline turned out, I expected something far more interesting than selling the hand on eBay! It was good to see Masuka stick to his guns though, and not fall for Ryan’s bullshit. Likewise, the Deb speech was pretty predictable. You just knew she was going to come out smelling of roses after it all  and Quinn and Batista doing weed was random. Funny but random. Still these are small complaints considering that the main storyline was great.

Dexter is undoubtedly at his most human when his son is involved and  has never been more so then when he begged God to help Harrison. Dexter has always relied on himself and his father’s code so it shows how much he’s changed when he asks a deity he doesn’t even believe in for help. If anyone doubts that Dexter’s character hasn’t developed, the scenes at the hospital should prove any doubter wrong, and the storyline of Harrison’s sickness added some great tension!

While Travis still doesn’t strike me as a serial killer, Gellar definitely is perfect as an insane religious fanatic. Who wouldn’t be freaked out by the image of him looking through the door at Travis having sex? I’m still not sure whether he’s imaginary or not but at the moment I’m leaning towards real. He’s definitely one sick psychopath, that’s for sure! The ending was just brilliant; it was extremely tense and very exciting. My heart was in my mouth when I saw the horrific angel scene the Doomsday Killers had set up a. Dexter seeing Travis staring rapturously at the crime scene was an intriguing development and I can’t wait to see what Dexter will do about it!

This episode has set the season up very nicely. We have two formidable villains, some intriguing plotlines and a Dexter who’s already hot on their trail. Things are shaping up nicely and I am dying to see where this is all going. I’m guessing there’s going to be a lot of twists and turns to come, and I for one am happy to be along for the ride.
