DEXTER – Hilarious and Dangerous

dexter those kinds of things review

While I wouldn’t usually describe Dexter as a comedy, throughout the show’s life it has shown a great sense of macabre, dark humour. The season premiere of Dexter took things to a whole new level; it was hilarious, and without any doubt the funniest episode of Dexter yet. I was literally crying with laughter at so many moments–everything at the reunion party was sheer brilliance, with Dexter dancing being a definite highlight for me! Sometimes the humour slightly dampened the sense of tension, but when a situation is this funny I can’t care less.

While I know a lot of people were worried about the theme of religion and how it would be dealt with in the show, but so far I think they’ve handled it quite well. I loved the whole conversation Dexter had with Batista, and I’m glad to see he’s not going to become a religious zealot (at least not yet), because, being honest, I don’t think it would suit the character. Dexter has his own faith, Harry’s Code, and it would be sad to see him lose that. I do like the idea of him exploring faith, though, not for him but for his son. It’s pretty apparent that Dexter doesn’t want his son to turn out like him, and it makes sense that he is searching for something that will help Harrison become a better person than what he became.

I enjoyed watching the new opponents that Dexter will have to deal with, and there is definitely potential  for great antagonists here. They reminded me of both The Ice Truck Killer and Trinity when I first saw them, that sense of wonder and fear when you saw their handiwork for the first time and being unsure of their motives for killing. As the two above are definitely my favourite antagonists in the series, I am excited to see what the writers do with the two new characters, and my hope is that they become one of Dexter’s great opponents, like Rudy and Trinity were. There’s a lot of potential there, that’s for sure. While the kill of the week, the jock from Dexter’s old high school, was fun to watch, Dexter is always at his best when he is squared up against a worthy adversary.

One thing I found strange and that really stood out was Harry encouraging Dexter to enjoy popularity and encouraging him to get involved. Harry is usually the voice of caution, the one who has constantly warned Dexter that he can’t fit in and that he needs to keep a low profile to survive. I’m unsure about this development with Harry; it just seems off to me considering how he has been portrayed in earlier seasons. The ending with Deborah getting attacked was interesting…was it something to do with the Fuentes brothers? I knew that was too big a loose end to be ignored, and I’ll definitely be disappointed if it’s just some random shooter!

While the first episode wasn’t perfect, Dexter has gotten off to a great start with a hilarious and exciting premiere that gives me hope that this season can be up there with the very best. Now I’ll leave you with the one of the funniest things I’ve seen in ages… HAMMERTIME!!!
