Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Olga Kurylenko Starz in MAGIC CITY tease

Magic City Starz

Starz has begun teasing us in an anticipation of its upcoming period series, Magic City, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Olga Kurylenko. The promo really sets the tone for the series, making it stand out amongst other similar shows out there. You instantly think of Mad Men, with Morgan standing in as Magic City’s version of Don Draper, but there’s a more brutal feel here, evidenced by the blonde girl who gets shot in the head. Mad Men is a slow burning series, and this seems like it will have a bit more pop to it.

It’s pretty obvious Magic City is purposefully looking to hook in fans of Mad Men and it isn’t the first. The Playboy Club and Pan Am were looking to do the same thing, but they have yet to succeed, with Playboy Club one of the first new series canceled in the 2011-2012 season. But Magic City has something those other shows never had; a strong leading man. Morgan will no doubt be the driving force behind this show. He’s a terrific actor and frankly it’s nice to see him starring in something. All too often he plays dead or soon to be dead characters.

With Morgan and the Mad Men feel bringing in audiences, this has a much better chance of sticking around than The Playboy Club ever did. Just seeing this teaser made me a believer in Magic City. Morgan is the king in a castle built on sand. That idea alone has my full attention. Magic City comes to Starz this spring.
