Joss Whedon’s WONDER WOMAN “like Angelina Jolie”

Angelina Jolie, Wonder Woman, DC Comics, Joss Whedon

I simply cannot wait to see the Joss Whedon take on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. It is thanks to that project that the quirky creator was recently interviewed and, be still our beating hearts, Whedon waxed poetic, during his talk, about how his vision for Wonder Woman would have gone down. He wrote a script for a movie featuring that lovely and powerful DC heroine, but like the series that was developed for television, the project was scrapped.

I can’t wait for Avengers either. When have we ever seen so many heroes on one set? Never. That’s when. But what would Whedon’s Wonder Woman character have been like in his film?

Whedon admits the character herself would have been a lot like actress, mom, and humanitarian Angelina Jolie. That isn’t to say Diana would have looked like Jolie in the appearance department, but in his script they are similar on a more basic level.

Imagine the heroine as a world traveler. She may be super powered, but she’s still “very naïve about people”. As any goddess might be, there is a detachment there. We get that from Superman sometimes because he’s an alien but he wants to feel the human condition. So, Whedon’s WW is this outsider who begins to discover her own “humanity and vulnerability.”

She takes a look at how the mundane people of Earth war against each other, hurt their fellow man, and look on as others starve, and she says, this makes no sense. She says to herself, “I can’t cope with it, I can’t understand, people are insane.” I would say Angie feels that way sometimes, too! It is a 5th Element sort of thing. I’ve got this mad ability, but why should I help you all, you guys aren’t very nice to each other.

Furthermore, and I really like this last bit, in his script the romance that develops between this confused and frustrated Amazonian goddess and Steve, revolves around Wonder Woman showing her own vulnerabilities and Steve checking her out when she’s not god-like. He gets to teach her what it is to be human and she gets to understand, but also say, hey, that’s not the best we can do!

The interview over at Rookie Mag also revealed that Much Ado is being edited now and should be complete by the Spring.
