Demi Lovato Slams Disney

Disney Channel Demi Lovato

It isn’t everyday a former Disney Channel star takes to the internet to slam their former employers over something actually worth getting fired up over, but thanks to Demi Lovato’s Twitter rant, I almost wish more people like her would speak out against the network. Lovato took issue with something that hit close to home for her, making her online outburst understandable and relatable.

TVline  explains all this drama started was on an episode of Shake It Up, a musical sitcom centered on two background dancers on a local television show. During an episode, one of the characters made a joke, saying, “I could just eat you up – well, if I ate.” How dare they make an eating disorder joke! That is so over the line, you can’t even see the line anymore. Lovato, who suffered from an eating disorder herself, immediately took to Twitter to say, “Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT,” and from there made a couple more comments directed at Disney.

Not being one to just roll over and take abuse… oh wait, that’s exactly what Disney did. Fearing a huge backlash fueled by Lovato’s comments, Disney made a quick response to put out the potential forest fire of hate. Via its own Twitter account, Disney responded by saying, “We hear you and are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible and reevaluating them. It’s NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!” It is so good to see a network like Disney make the right call on something like this. They have a lot of young, impressionable viewers who could very easily be lead to believe having an eating disorder is a-okay. My hats off to Lovato for standing up against this.
