John Carter IMAX One Sheet

John Carter of Mars, Disney

A new kind of space odyssey is coming to theaters March 9th, 2012. It’s called John Carter of Mars and today we have a look at the exclusive IMAX 3D poster premiere. Here are the details.

John Carter is a character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in the early 1900s, believe it or not. He precedes even Conan the Barbarian, though the two fictional characters would have been pulp contemporaries in the thirties. Carter, acted now by hottie, and former Marvel Comics Gambit actor, Taylor Kitsch, starts out as a former Confederate soldier on Earth. Forget about Cowboys & Aliens, though, because Carter is transported to Mars, or the planet the locals call Barsoom. Once there he is smack dab in the middle of two quarreling nations led Tars Tarkas and Princess Dejah Thoris. Tarkas is acted by the one and only Willem Dafoe, while Lynn Collins stars as the Princess. Carter will become the champion of Barsoom.

We have Fandango to thank for this look at the IMAX poster. Obviously there are more than just humanoids living on Barsoom. And I doubt this pair of furry giants will be quite as welcoming as Princess Dejah for example.

The film is written and directed by WALL-E director Andrew Stanton, with some help from Mark Andrews and Michael Chabon. Aside from just looking very cool and re-introducing us to an old and likely forgotten mythos, Disney’s John Carter reminds me a lot of the old cartoon John Blackstar. That’s enough to keep me interested. How about you?
