Last Doctor Who Season for Karen Gillan

Doctor Who BBC

With the latest confirmations that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darville would indeed be in Doctor Who Series 7, the question being brought up most often had been, “What happens to them after?” Well, sadly, we have an answer to that as well. Steven Moffat dropped the heavy news that following Series 7, the Doctor will be finding a new companion, saying goodbye to Amy (Gillan) and Rory (Darville). Apparently, the decision to lose them was mutual; likely with everyone feeling it was time for the Doctor to find some new friends. That may be true, but that doesn’t mean it will be any easier to let go of Amy Pond.

When Gillan and Darville eventually do say their farewells it is expected to be a heartbreaking (as mentioned over at Mirror) end to the friendship first started in 2009 when they she won the part, at the time as an unknown actress. Her fiery personality (and let’s not forget the fiery red hair, yowza!) will be sorely missed. But let’s not fret just yet! We still have Gillan for quite some time. In fact, we won’t have to worry about her leaving until 2013, which seems like an awful long ways away right now. Side note: I am once again typing this while speaking in a British accent. That’s hard to stop.

When the evitable departure does arrive, we can at least take some solace in the likely continuing story of River Song. She is not expected to depart the series, which depending on your own prejudices is either a good or bad thing. I personally love River, though she could never take Amy Pond’s place.
