James Bond Director is The Last Resort for Shawn Ryan

Casino Royale

A TV show is getting the big screen touch as Martin Campbell, the director of Casino Royale, signs on to executive produce and direct the pilot for ABC’s new futuristic thriller, The Last Resort.

Campbell, who also directed GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, and Green Lantern (Hey! Accidents happen) is joining writers Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and Karl Gajdusek (Dead Like Me) for the new show that received a pilot production commitment back in August. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Last Resort follows the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine that flees to an abandoned NATO outpost and declares themselves the world’s smallest nuclear nation after they refuse orders commanding them to launch nuclear missiles.

While he’s been spending recent years with big screen projects, Campbell is no stranger to the small screen, winning a British Academy Television Award for Best Director for his mid-80’s BBC drama, Edge of Darkness. If that name sounds familiar, it’s probably because Campbell turned the show into a Mel Gibson film in 2010.

While The Last Resort did get a pilot commitment from ABC, the studio hasn’t actually given the green light for production to start yet so everyone is basically just waiting to be told they can get to work. Hopefully ABC will give the go-ahead because the show sounds like an original breath of fresh air that prime-time TV desperately needs these days.
