Natural Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in GRAVITY

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are going where very few celebs have dared to go. No, not deep space, although that is where the story takes place in Gravity. The two stars are going make-up free in 3D.

Bullock and Clooney probably didn’t jump for joy when director Alfonso Cuaron said no make-up but the two pros didn’t back down from the challenge, and it’s a challenge that becomes even bigger when you throw in the 3D aspect of the film.

“Our vain little heads are going to be some massive 17-foot image,” recently revealed in an interview on USA Today. “You are going to see details because it’s shot on this digital film that shows everything. It’s so scary. There are scenes where you say, ‘This is where you have to let go and let God.’ And, thank God, there are no nude scenes.”

While neither star is in need of a bag over their head, both Bullock and Clooney are well past the ‘spring chicken’ stage of their lives so the no make-up rule definitely has more impact for them that it would for someone in their twenties.

In Gravity, Bullock plays a medical engineer that gets stranded in space with Clooney’s seasoned astronaut, so going sans make-up is a realistic move that’s rarely seen on the big screen, and I hope it’s a trend that catches on. It’s a pet peeve of mine to see characters go through an extreme situation and then emerge with perfect make-up and hair.

It’s unknown if the 3D filming or the lack of make-up affected Clooney more but he didn’t mince words when talking about the popular film format. “It’s the first time I’ve been in 3-D,” says Clooney, “and, hopefully, the last time.”
