How would Doctor Who fans feel about the idea of having the director of 2011’s magnificent drama, Drive, direct an episode of the long-running BBC series? You know what, don’t bother answering that. Nicolas Winding Refn was already turned down to direct Doctor Who and I’m sure none of you were even aware of it. That’s kind of a drag. The man is a very talented director. If you haven’t seen Drive yet, I suggest you give it a chance. It may have been snubbed from the Best Picture category for the Academy Awards, but it’s still better than most other movies out there.
Refn revealed his desire to direct Doctor Who during an interview with ShortList.com. If you read the actual interview, you’ll immediately get the sense Refn is over and done with Drive and is very much ready for his next project. He’s currently working with Drive star, Ryan Gosling, on Only God Forgives, with filming taking place in Thailand. The duo has a third film also planned, permanently causing an association in my mind. When I think of Refn I will automatically think of Gosling.
Though he was turned down for Doctor Who, Refn has directed some television, notably directing two episodes of Marble, a British TV show. Looking into the future, Refn may or may not be on board to direct a sequel to Drive. It’s too early to tell if he’ll be game or not. I hope he is. I couldn’t imagine a different director doing the film.
