ABC’s The Last Resort Lands Lead

The Last Resort ABC

Pilot season is exciting to me because you get to see a series be built from the ground up, with the concept developed, the writer brought in, actors cast; all this is just one of the major reasons I’m excited for ABC’s The Last Resort. I’ve noticed many of the pilots that have been picked up this year have had very intriguing concepts. That’s really the only word you could use to describe them; “concepts.” The Last Resort isn’t your run of the mill drama series, so it needs an actor capable of leading it.

TVLine reported Emmy Award winning actor, Andre Braugher, will play Capt. Marcus Chaplin, the commander of an AWOL submarine and its crew. The submarine is a U.S. nuclear sub in the not-too-distant future. The entire crew of the sub becomes fugitives when they refuse orders to fire their missiles (it’s not at all clear what they were supposed to be firing on). They make camp on an island equipped with a NATO listening station, declaring themselves to be an independent nuclear nation. Now tell me that doesn’t sound at least a little bit unique.

The pilot is being executive produced by The Shield’s Shawn Ryan and written by Karl Gajdusek. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for the The Last Resort. I’m very interested to see how this concept will work in the long term, so I’m hoping it gets picked up to series. And of all the people they could have cast, Braugher has the on screen presence that would lend itself perfectly to this fictional scenario.
