Behind Emilia Clarke’s Heartbreaking GAME OF THRONES Scene

Game of Thrones HBO

One of the toughest scenes to be shot for Game of Thrones‘ first season (which will be on Blu-Ray and DVD March 6th) was a scene in the sixth episode, “A Golden Crown,” where Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) has to eat a fresh horse heart. Executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss discussed what made that particular scene difficult to capture on film, which turned out to be a problem with balance. It’s a very important scene for Daenerys, as she needs to prove herself and her unborn child to Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa). The ritual needs understandable without too much exposition. That’s a tricky thing to get right.

Along with the interview with Benioff and Weiss, The Hollywood Reporter had the first look at one of the special features exclusive to the Blu-Ray release of Game of Thrones Season 1. In the video embedded below you can see the Anatomy of an Episode feature. It’s essentially a behind the scenes look at a particular episode, in this case Episode 6. It offers picture-in-picture commentary of the entire episode, explaining set construction and other cool little tidbits of the film-making process. My favorite little nugget of information was learning the horse heart was actually made of the same substance gummy bears are made of.

It’s a great look at what goes on behind the cameras of GoT and has me exponentially excited for the Blu-Ray release. I can’t wait to get my hands on it and just absorb all of its knowledge.
