Elementary, my Dear Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu

Here’s a puzzler for you sleuths out there. If Sherlock’s Dr. Watson was acted by a woman, would their odd-couple friendship still be just as entertaining? Television fans will get the chance to find out. There’s another Sherlock-inspired series in the works and it’s coming to CBS. It’s all Elementary, of course.

Sherlock, the British take on the story of the world’s greatest detective, takes place in the modern day and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Holmes, with Martin Freeman as the long-suffering Watson. It is a dynamite series, which makes me want to laugh when I hear anyone else might attempt the same level of genius.

Still, CBS’s pilot is called Elementary, and I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a female Watson before, so I’m intrigued. Best of all, it is Lucy Liu whom EW.com reports has won the gender-bending role.

I think Liu is gorgeous, but her work in Kill Bill aside, I’ve never been a huge fan. That is, I wasn’t a big fan until I saw a sneak peek of her latest run on Southland for TNT. My goodness! Who knew the actress could be so gritty, raw, and believable? I love her tough cookie character. Believe it or not, her take on a female L.A. cop isn’t too cliche at all. Southland is pretty phenomenal anyway. It’s easily one of my top 10 favorite shows of all time.

For Elementary, the headliner will be Eli Stone‘s Jonny Lee Miller as our modern day Sherlock. If any actor can pull off a gifted mind, it’s him. He’s British, so I wonder if we’ll hear the accent or not. I suppose this version of Sherlock could be an American, but that might be one too many changes. After all, Watson has already been made a girl.
