NBC is sticking with what they know for this falls pilot season. They are returning to the Law & Order creator – Dick Wolf – for a new series pilot called Chicago Fire. Set in Chicago the action-driven drama is about the complex and heroic men and women of the Chicago Fire Department. There has been relatively little buzz on the show and its cast aside from the news that Eamonn Walker will play the captain of the squad. Now fans have something else to gab about as NBC reveals its latest Chicago Fire casting news.
Deadline reports that Taylor Kinney has landed the lead role in the Chicago Fire pilot, as Kelly Severide. Severide is the leader of an elite group of firefighters who respond to the most dangerous fires or rescue operations. The character is being described as an adrenaline junkie and a man with the drive to jump into the most dangerous situations. The pilot was written by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas and will be directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff. Executive producers of the series are Wolf, Brandt, Haas, Peter Jankowski and Danielle Gelber.
Kinney is returning to NBC after his brief nine episode interlude with The Vampire Diaries where he played Mason Lockwood, a naughty werewolf who was eventually killed off by Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). Kinney went on to guest star in two episodes of the Showtime series Shameless. Although Kinney may not have made too many waves with his current acting portfolio, he certainly has been in the spotlight for dating the infamous Lady Gaga.
Gaga and Kinney first met on the set of her music video for You and I back in September, in which Kinney played her love interest. From that point the two have been seen all over Hollywood together. The twenty-five year old pop superstar and the thirty year old actor have stirred up some controversy over their relationship. Kinney’s ex-girlfriend Brittany Sackett states that she found out about Lord and Lady Gaga’s romance while Sackett and Kinney were still together. Sackett also indicated that Kinney is only dating the songstress to improve his own fame and status in Hollywood, she describes him as “fame hungry.”
Regardless of his reasons for dating Gaga, Kinney is now a rising star in Hollywood. Snagging a lead role in a Dick Wolf creation might guarantee you an acting gig for 10 years! Even if the show is not picked up by networks, Kinney is beginning to reach leading man status which will surely translate to more offers down the road.
