Emma Watson Got that Bling

Emma Watson

Despite the Harry Potter star Emma Watson recommitting to her academic career, she has still found some time to fit film projects in to her busy schedule. Watson, who has just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower as well as having a small role in My Week With Marilyn will be  adding another film to her ever growing list.

The British actress who was tapped for the lead role in Your Voice In My Head has now been cast in Sofia Coppola’s Bling Ring. Coppola will write and direct the flick as well as producing alongside Youree Henley and her brother Roman Coppola. Bling Ring is about a group of teenage girls residing in Hollywood who were arrested in 2009 for a string of break-ins at the homes of stars including Lindsay Lohan, Orlando Bloom and Paris Hilton. The group of girls who hail from affluent families, became famous for pouring over TV shows and magazines featuring celebrities looking for clothing and other items which they thought would look better on them rather than the owners.

This is not the first time someone will tell the tale of the teenage bandits. The Lifetime network released a TV movie called The Bling Ring which aired in 2011. This version starred Jennifer Grey, Austin Butler and Yin Chang. Hey, Hollywood has to draw their inspiration from somewhere right?

Variety gave us the scoop on Watson’s role in Coppola’s version. Watson will be cast as one of the teenage girls – we don’t know which one yet – and will play one of the criminal nuisances in the film. Though not much else has been released about the cast, Coppola seems pleased with how the casting is progressing so far, “I’m excited about the young cast we’re assembling and I’m looking forward to shooting on location in Los Angeles.” This could be quite the feather in Watson’s cap as Coppola has a habit of giving rising female stars roles that have allowed them to break into more adult oriented films, for example, Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation.

Bling Ring could very well be the next step for Watson as she transitions from kids movies to adult movies. Although I’m not sure she needs too much help since she’s made some bold choices already, appearing in non-kid movies. Her next project Your Voice In My Head is certainly not something for the kids to watch as it deals with mental illness and its effects. Strangely enough though, Watson might be taking a step back as it is rumored that she will also star in the film adaptation of Beauty and the Beast by Guillermo del Toro. Although there is no production date or release date for del Toro’s film, this is another fairy tale that movie and network executives will be capitalizing on. The CW as well as ABC both have pilots ordered for Beauty and the Beast. Lets see how much we can over-do this story as well!

Look for Emma Watson in The Perks of Being a Wallflower which is due to be released this year and look for her again as she gets to play the bad girl in Bling Ring.
