Emma Stone as Amazing Spider-Man’s Gwen Stacy

Garfield needs to get his hands off my girl. Emma Stone is in full Gwen Stacy force in these two new images released by Sony from Amazing Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield (aka the Spider-Man guy in the movie standing next to Emma) swings into theaters on July 4th weekend (July 3rd), kicking off a new Spidey-verse helmed by Marc Webb. I have no problem with a reboot especially when considering the differences that are going to be apparent – not better or worse – due to Raimi and Webb just being rather drastically unique from each other (though it remains to be seen if the latter will kick the box office in like Raimi did with the webslinger). I liked the previous films well enough, but I’m already more comfortable with the idea of Emma Stone as Gwen than I was with Dunst as MJ. Personally, even with all of the success of this franchise, I’d love to see Spidey (not to mention X-Men and Fantastic Four) back into the hands of Marvel Studios.

I also was pleasantly surprised at the application of the Lizard, a villain choice that while rumored for years under Raimi always caused me trepidation. Stone and Garfield will be joined in the cast by Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field.
