A Storm of Swords! Game of Thrones Season 3 Roll Call

HBO’s Game of Thrones season 2 is coming to an end this Sunday, extended style at that, and though we can never be sure who may survive or not survive to live again in Game of Thrones season 3, we can discuss some of the new characters we can expect, by way of a list from the showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss who released the list to EW. These names would all be very familiar to the readers of A Song of Ice Fire, and specifically A Storm of Swords, the third (and I think by far the best) of the George R.R. Martin’s novels in the series.

- Mance Rayder: We’ve heard about him all season. A former member of the Night’s Watch who became the “King Beyond the Wall,” the leader of the Wildlings.
- Daario Naharis: A confident and seductive warrior.
- Jojen Reed; Meera Reed: A teenage brother and sister duo with special insights.
- Edmure Tully: A brash young member of the Tully family.
- Ser Brynden Tully (The Blackfish): Catelyn Stark’s uncle.
- Lady Selyse Florent: Stannis Baratheon’s wife.
- Shireen: Stannis’ daughter.
- Olenna Redwyne (The Queen of Thorns): Margaery Tyrell’s sharp-witted grandmother.
- Beric Dondarrion: A skilled knight who is the leader of the outlaw group Brotherhood Without Banners.
- Thoros of Myr: A red priest who follows the same religion as Melisandre.
- Tormund Giantsbane: A Wildling raider.
It’s hard to go too much into these characters without revealing spoilers, even as immediate in relevance to Sunday’s episode (if the episodes and season holds true to form). From a personal, standpoint, The Queen of Thorns, in the books, is a scene stealer in very brief doses. Kind of reminds me the way Maggie Smith is in Downton Abbey in that regard, though not in the same manner.
Seeing the name of the Blackfish kind of baffles because it seems difficult to believe how he could not have already appeared. That said, considering his future, there is a great dialogue scene between him and the Kingslayer that should be great onscreen if they choose to show it.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up for Shireen and at least one or two others on this list. They’ve already established Stannis as being childless and considering the culling of tertiary characters could miss out.
That said, you clearly missed an obvious one: The Red Viper.

The possibly may correct this by saying it’s only a son he lacks not actually being childless. Either that or they may just scrap the idea altogether.

This is not my list, this is, as I stated above, a list given to EW by the creators of the show. I didn’t guess at any of these, nor is it a personal wishlist. I also didn’t clearly miss anything (because, again, it’s not my list). Even with that in mind, they noted that this is (obviously) not a complete list of the new faces we will see in season 3.

Where is Oberyn of Dorne? I’ve got to assume we will see Mace Tyrell as well. I suppose this is all dependent on whether or not they decide to break the 3rd book into two seasons (which I assume they’ll have to do).
In that case we may have to wait until Season 4 for some of these characters…and for Coldhands.

I’m happy that they’ve decided to put Meera and Jojen in. Just watched the last episode last night (I live in Britain so it only aired then) and I am already looking forward to the third season. I have read that Benioff and Weiss are planning on splitting the third book into two seasons and so I am looking forward to the fourth season also. Do not know how I’m goning to be able to see the 4th season considering I will be at uni and therefore away from home… here’s hoping the Halls of residence have Sky Atlantic…
