Ian McShane in American Horror Story Season 2?

American Horror Story FX

I’m not much for rumor and speculation, but in the world of American Horror Story there’s a certain entertainment gained from imagining which actors and actresses would best fit into Ryan Murphy’s world of horror and pop culture. The “news” of Ian McShane being considered for a role on American Horror Story doesn’t at all surprise me – it often seems like the show specifically looks for individuals with an appearance fitting of the setting – and in all honesty it wouldn’t shock me to learn McShane would take the part offered to him. While he is best known for his serious dramatic roles, like in Deadwood, he has shown no qualms with doing less serious work. Have you seen him in Hot Rod? He is completely ridiculous in that movie.

McShane’s name popped up when Chloe Sevigny, who has a recurring role as a nymphomaniac in American Horror Story, let slip to TV Guide he was being considered to play her character’s doctor. Sevigny’s role will see her locked up in an East Coast mental institution where she may or may not be mistreated by the staff. The institution is being run by Jessica Lange’s character, though she likely isn’t aware of any misdeeds going on, but don’t take my word on that. Lange’s character has been called the protagonist of this new season, but that doesn’t mean she’ll be entirely innocent.

As soon as I heard McShane’s name, I could immediately see him on American Horror Story, speaking in his deep, gravely voice. He has a vibe about him that makes him such a wonderful antagonist. It’s hard to see him in any other way. While usually I can discount speculation rather easily, I really hope McShane is cast. He would fit in well in this crazy little show Murphy has taken the time to create. And since it’s an anthology series, there’s a chance he could also come back in subsequent seasons as a different character!

I’d prefer to see him on Sons of Anarchy with so many other Deadwood alumni. But I’ll take what I can get!
