Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 – Is Gaius Charles Trading Football for a Stethoscope?

Grey's Anatomy ABC

Why is the first thought that popped into my head when I heard of Gaius Charles’ casting on Grey’s Anatomy was “Oh great, another doctor to come to the hospital.” I know this is a medical drama, but that doesn’t mean every new character introduced has to be a doctor. That would be preposterous – and bad writing – yet it is that idea my brain inevitably wanders toward. Charles could play anyone with infinite possibilities for his profession. He could be an accountant or a rocket scientist. He could do what he knows best and play a football player. The sky’s the limit with enough imagination. Unfortunately, I can’t even say whom Charles will be playing.

According to TVLine, the Friday Night Lights alum will be recurring on Grey’s Anatomy, but the details of his character are still being worked out. What that means for us is there will be a lack of information surrounding his character until things are more finalized. Obviously the writers don’t want information getting out regarding a character that is still being written. They could change any number of things about him before they’re finished creating his backstory and personality. So until everything is solid why say anything? But until we know more I’m going to assume Charles will be playing the newest doctor to join the forces of Seattle Grace. It’s a safe bet.

Charles will not be the first Friday Night Lights actor to grace Seattle Grace with his presence. Kyle Chandler, Jesse Plemmons, and Zach Gilford have all spent a little time on Greys. It’s almost like the show is a safe haven for the former FNL cast. It should be a thing to try and get every single person from FNL to appear on Greys, even if just in very small roles. And maybe, just maybe, they can all be anything but doctors.
