Paget Brewster to Follow Up Criminal Minds with SVU

Law & Order: SVU NBC

Having already left Criminal Minds for greener pastures – twice, by the way – I find myself more than a little surprised Paget Brewster’s first gig after leaving the CBS series will be with Law & Order: SVU. I mean, why leave a popular crime procedural with the hopes of branching out and trying new things only to end up working on yet another crime procedural? I know it’s not a permanent role, but couldn’t Brewster find something a little bit better? One could argue this is a nice, soft transition for her before she tries something really different, but I don’t buy it.

The first time she left Criminal Minds it was due to money costs, and it seemed like Brewster was ready to really branch out and she even did a TV movie, but she was pulled back in. Now that she’s gone for good this time, she had expressed a desire to work in comedy, an obvious departure from Criminal Minds. SVU doesn’t seem quite like what she had in mind. Maybe it’s harder to move on than she thought it would be. Oh well, no use worrying about it. Regardless of where her career goes, she’s going to be appearing on SVU during its two-hour premiere for Season 14.

Brewster will be playing the head of the Public Integrity Unit at the District Attorney’s office where she will be handling the case of Captain Cragen (Dann Florek). Those of you with normally functioning memories should recall Cragen woke up next to a dead woman in the Season 13 finale and is now under suspicion of murder. The premiere will also feature frequent guest stars Laura Benanti, Pippa Black, and Peter Jacobson. The premiere will be the first episode of the series to air in its new timeslot on Wednesday at 9pm.

About Brody Gibson

+Brody Gibson studied film in Vancouver, BC. I originally intended to become a video editor, but realized I have a passion for writing. To say I love television is a bit of an understatement. I watch it religiously, think about it constantly. To be able to talk about it is one the best things in the world. Combining that with my love of writing gives me the opportunity to express my opinions to the Internet masses and start gripping conversations.

    I’m sorry she’s gone, but it’s:
    Monday: Bones
    Tuesday: NCIS
    Wed.: Criminal Mind

She’s an actress. She likes to work. She auditions for any role she can. She booked this one. Simple as that.

Listen to/read recent interviews with her and you’ll find that she a) loves SVU and is excited to be doing it, and b) still plans/hopes to do comedy.

Paget did not “leave” Criminal Minds twice. She was unfairly fired the first time. She was then forced back when the network realized it had screwed up. She chose to leave when her contract was up. Not surprising when you consider how she’d been treated by the network. I think they’d forgotten she’s a person, not their property.
