Beverly Hills Cop Lives on as a TV Series?

For those of you still holding out hope for a new Beverly Hills Cop movie, you can officially stop now. The idea of continuing the series is still alive, but it has evolved into something new. Another movie is essentially out of the question, but star Eddie Murphy has changed tactics, instead focusing on creating a TV series. Now, Murphy is getting on in years, no longer the young pup he once was when he was playing Axel Foley, so don’t expect to see him as the star of the show. But that doesn’t mean Beverly Hills Cop is getting the reboot treatment. Far from it.
As reported by Vulture and Deadline, Murphy is teaming up with The Shield creator Shawn Ryan – keep a look out for Ryan’s new ABC series, The Last Resort, this fall – and Sony Pictures TV to bring us a television sequel to Beverly Hills Cop. The current idea – this is subject to change at any time – is for the series to follow Axel Foley’s son, who has moved to Beverly Hills to escape the shadow cast by his father, now the chief of police in Detroit. In this way, Murphy can still appear in the series, starting with the pilot and then popping up now and then when he has time in his schedule.
The format of the show will be an hour-long crime procedural, but with a buddy cop sense of humor. Being a crime procedural makes it the kind of show one might expect to see on CBS, but right now all networks are showing interest in getting their hands on Beverly Hills Cop. Murphy and Ryan have taken the show to CBS, ABC, Fox and NBC, making this a very intriguing development to keep a watch on. Not only is it reviving a beloved franchise, but also it’s doing so in an unexpected way. Wouldn’t it be fun if all the networks started playing dirty just so they could get their hands on this show?
