New Girl: Leslie Mann is Out, Parker Posey In

The Queen of the Indies herself, Parker Posey, has been cast in a role in New Girl’s upcoming Season 2 premiere. This is a bit of interesting news to digest because it wasn’t too long ago that the part Posey was given was already filled by another actress: Leslie Mann. It isn’t all that often you hear of recasting in television. Usually whoever gets the part gets the part. Having someone drop out of a gig is something I would expect from a movie, but TV is filmed so quickly there just doesn’t seem like there would be time to bother casting anyone unless you were one hundred percent sure they were committed. But as it stands, Mann had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts and Posey was brought in to replace her.
If I were either of these actress, I wouldn’t be all that jazzed about the part. According to TVLine, the role Posey took over for was as a “shot girl” at a party celebrating the removal of Schmidt’s penis cast. It hardly sounds like the most glamorous of jobs, but having not seen the script or know anything else about the character, there must be something about the part that hasn’t been released to the public. Posey will likely have a greater significance beyond being a simple “shot girl.”
And you know what? New Girl isn’t even a stranger to recasting. In the original pilot, Damon Wayans Jr. had a starring role, but he was committed to Happy Endings and had to drop out. A new character, Winston, was written to replace him. Obviously that’s a more extreme case of recasting, but it’s enough to make my point that New Girl has had to replace someone before. You’ll be able to see Parker Posey when New Girl returns for its second season on Sept. 25. I wonder if it’ll still be “adorkable.”
