Rita Wilson and Colin Quinn in Mysterious Girls Roles

HBO has a surprising hit with Girls, its comedy from Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow. It took a different look at women living in New York City that shows like Gossip Girl and Sex and the City overlooked: those troubling years when you’re in your 20s and still trying to navigate through life while making as few mistakes as possible. The freshman series has been critically loved and even managed to become Emmy nominated. Head writer, co-showrunner and lead actress Lena Dunham clearly loves this show she has created, but she’s found an unusual love in keeping the show’s casting for Season 2 a well-kept secret. Case in point: just take a look at who they have lined up so far.
As reported by TVLine, Girls’ mysterious castings have now grown to include Rita Wilson and Colin Quinn. Starting off with Wilson, she’ll be playing the mother of Marnie (Allison Williams). The big question is, how alike will mother and daughter be? Will Wilson be playing someone equally uptight; perhaps even more so than Marnie, perhaps explaining how she became the way she is. Or perhaps Wilson is playing a more laidback character, the better to contrast between the family members. Either way is good for me, with plenty of opportunities for conflict between mother and daughter.
Now when it comes to Quinn, who tweeted about his “shoot”,things become even more mysterious. Absolutely nothing has been revealed about whom he will be playing outside of the news that he was shooting scenes. The former Saturday Night Live actor was seen on set in a picture posted to Twitter by Apatow. Without these confirmations, I’d be hard-pressed to believe he’s actually playing someone. This could all be a practical joke, though I’m not sure exactly who the joke is on. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see when Girls returns in January. Also, keep your eyes open for Donald Glover and Patrick Wilson who are also guest-starring next season on Girls.
