Modern Family: Forget the Emmys, Here’s Ferris Bueller!

Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss Matthew Broderick guest-starring on Season 4 of Modern Family. That’s a pretty overused quote from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but what other work has Broderick done that’s worth quoting? In all honesty, not much. So it’s good to see him out and about getting some work unrelated to his Ferris Bueller character – remember that Super Bowl commercial he did? I’m not saying he doesn’t get work; it’s just not exactly memorable. I know I didn’t see Tower Heist when it came out and I don’t know anyone who has. In my eyes, a gig on Modern Family is a good move for Broderick.
As reported by TVLine, Broderick will be playing a neurotic friend of Phil’s. As much as I love Broderick as Ferris, seeing him play neurotic characters is just as fun. When he did that guest spot on 30 Rock a few years back, he had me cracking more than a couple ribs at his antics alongside Alec Baldwin. Now imagine him playing against Ty Burrell’s Phil Dunphy. Will it be funny? Definitely. And there’s one thing you should know about Broderick: he may not be doing much in terms of screen acting, but that’s because he’s been quite busy on the stage. Currently you can see him starring in Nice Work If You Can Get It on Broadway.
While we’re on the subject of Modern Family, it did quite well in the awards department this past Sunday. It won four Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series for the second year in a row. It also took home Emmys for Outstanding Directing for Comedy Series (Steven Levitan), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Eric Stonetreet) and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Julie Bowen). Not bad Modern Family. Not bad at all.
