Disney Channel Sets Premiere Date for Sofia the First

Sofia the First Disney Channel

The time for a new Disney princesses is fast approaching whether we are ready for it or not. The Disney Channel is paving the way for its new “little girl princess” franchise, aimed at younger girls, with the debut of Sofia the First, the first little girl princess. The series will follow Princess Sofia, who has only recently become a princess because of her mother’s marriage to a king. She attends Royal Prep, an academy for young princesses and princes, with the lessons focused on how to be a good princess, something all little girls need to know. The only other thing you need to know about the new series is when it will premiere, which I will gladly tell you.

According to TV Guide, Sofia the First will premiere on the Disney Channel with an animated TV movie, Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, on Sunday, Nov. 18, with a repeat premiere on Disney Junior Thursday, Nov. 22. The actual series won’t be debuting on Disney Junior until early 2013, which is kind of a bummer, but what are you going to do? I have no horse in this race so Disney can do as they please when it comes to scheduling, but I’m sure there will be many a little girl who will want to see more of Princess Sofia but cannot because making kids wait two months for their fix of tiny princesses is good marketing.

Modern Family’s Ariel Winter will do the voice for Sofia and other voice actors include Sarah Ramirez, Wayne Brady and Tim Gunn. There’s a storybook that was released Tuesday and a digital album will be available for download from iTunes beginning Tuesday, Nov. 13. The Disney Channel will air a music video featuring Winter performing “Rise and Shine” the same day as Once Upon a Princess’s Nov. 18 premiere. Prepare yourselves: Princess Sofia merchandise will be everywhere.
