What new project is reuniting Pretty Woman actress Julia Roberts and Glee creator Ryan Murphy? The film is called The Normal Heart and we have all the details.

When it comes to television, Murphy has been responsible for series like Nip/Tuck, Glee and American Horror Story. Let’s not forget that the writer and producer also directed Julia Roberts in the feature film, Eat Pray Love. Now the duo will re-team for The Normal Heart.

Deadline describe the upcoming film as an adaption of the Tony-winning play by Larry Kramer. Joining Julia Roberts on the cast are Mark Ruffalo and White Collar star, Matt Bomer.

If you’re actually familiar with the play, there’s a good chance the film will be a faithful adaptation because the screenplay is also being written Larry Kramer. Who would know the material better, after all? Ryan Murphy will direct, of course, and he plans to executive produce with help from Jason Blum, Dede Gardner and Dante Di Loreto. Shooting is scheduled to begin in New York City sometime this year.

So, what’s the plot? The play is set in the 1980′s, during the “onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City”. Roberts has the role of Emma Brookner, a paraplegic and a doctor who cares for many of the first to suffer from the disease. Ruffalo will act as Ned Weeks, a homosexual who feels the heavy toll as HVI-AIDS affects his gay community. Bomer will co-star as Felix Turner, a reporter who becomes romantically involved with Ned.

You may be too young to recall, but the storyline reminds this writer a bit of Philadelphia, which starred Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, not to mention Antonio Banderas.

As for The Normal Heart, the film is expected to debut on HBO in 2014. The film has been on a long, tough road toward becoming a reality. At one point Barbara Streisand was attached, as well as Brad Pitt’s Plan B productions.
