What sold me on the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series was the promise of more Clark Gregg in his fantastic Agent Phil Coulson character. Without him, it would be hard to connect the series to the film franchise. It didn’t hurt to also have Joss Whedon writing and directing the pilot. But do we want to stop with Gregg? Or is there a possibility we can squeeze other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from the The Avengers into this potentially great series? What about Cobie Smulders? She proved to be an interesting character despite how little time she spent on screen – understandable considering the movie wasn’t really about her – but maybe we can learn a little more about her on S.H.I.E.L.D.

Before we can worry about expanding on Smulders’ Maria Hill character, we need to figure out how we’re going to get her on set. Smulders’ recently re-upped with How I Met Your Mother, which is coming back for a ninth season, so her commitments to that show could definitely put an end to any hopes of a recurring part on S.H.I.E.L.D. However, TVLine reported Smulders as saying her commitments to HIMYM wouldn’t necessarily conflict with at the very least a cameo. I have to admit, I would prefer her to be a part of the series in a significant way, but if I can’t have that I’ll take something miniscule.

Production on the pilot began late last week and with all this talk about Smulders’ possible cameo, I’m wondering if she’ll pop up on set. This pilot has me very excited, even more so than it did before. It stars Gregg as Coulson, Ming-Na as Melinda May, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Elizabeth Henstridge as Gemma Simmons, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz and Brett Dalton as Agent Grant, Maybe once HIMYM has finally come to an end, Smulders will be scooped up by S.H.I.E.L.D. as a regular. But that’s being a little too hopeful. First S.H.I.E.L.D. has to get a series order before we can start thinking about a second season.
